Rise of the backyard 18th birthday
Why Are 18th Birthday Parties at Home Becoming So Popular in Sydney? There was a time when turning 21 was the big birthday. A huge party, a fancy venue and a guest list that seemed to include everyone you had ever met.
But things seem to be changing. At Walkers Hire, we’re seeing more families choosing to celebrate 18th birthdays at home, while the 21st birthday is often looking a little different – and sometimes doesn’t involve a big party at all.
So, what’s going on? 18th birthdays are the new big party
Turning 18 is a pretty big deal. It’s the first major milestone birthday where you’re officially an adult, and for many families, it feels like the perfect time to throw a proper celebration.
There’s also a practical reason we’re seeing more 18th birthdays at home: finding a venue isn’t always easy.
Some venues have become much more restrictive around hosting 18th birthday parties, particularly when it comes to large groups of young adults. There can be extra conditions around security, alcohol, guest numbers and noise, which can make hiring a venue more complicated – and more expensive.
So why not bring the party home?
We’re seeing it firsthand - Professional party planner Allison Barrett from My Perfect Party www.myperfectparty.com.au agrees that the trend towards celebrating 18th birthdays at home has really grown.
“We’ve definitely seen a big influx of clients choosing to host their children’s 18th birthdays at home over the past couple of years. There are a few reasons for this, but I think parents like having a little more control over the environment, while the birthday kids still get to have a proper party with their friends.
“A backyard can be transformed into an amazing party space with a marquee, great lighting, furniture, a bar and a dance floor. And for parents, having the party at home can feel a lot safer and less stressful than sending 100 teenagers off to a venue somewhere across Sydney!”
It’s a trend Allison has seen consistently through her work planning and styling parties for families across Sydney and interstate.
The backyard can actually be a great option. An 18th birthday at home doesn’t have to mean a few friends standing around the kitchen bench.
With the right setup, your backyard can be transformed into a proper party venue. A marquee, bar, dance floor, lounge furniture, lighting and some good styling can completely change the space and create a party that feels just as exciting as a hired venue.
At Walkers Hire, we can help with the practical side of things, from the marquee through to party furniture and flooring, so you can create a space that suits the birthday and the house.
And because every backyard is different, a marquee can be designed around the space you have.
There’s also something in it for the parents!
Let’s be honest – an 18th birthday can be a little nerve-racking for parents.
Having the party at home means you know where your teenager is, you know where the guests are and you have much more control over the environment.
It also means you’re not worrying about how everyone is getting home from a venue across Sydney at midnight.
That doesn’t mean you need to hover over the party all night!
In fact, we always recommend bringing in professional security guards for larger 18th birthday parties. It’s a relatively small extra cost that can provide a much-needed safety blanket for parents and help keep things calm and organised throughout the night.
The idea isn't to make the party feel like a nightclub – quite the opposite. Having security there means there are people responsible for managing access and dealing with any issues, allowing the family to relax a little more.
And then there’s the 21st...
Interestingly, 21st birthdays seem to be taking a slightly different path.
By 21, many young adults are choosing to spend their birthday money on travel, with overseas trips with friends, partners or family becoming a popular way to celebrate.
Others are opting for a more structured celebration at a restaurant, bar or dedicated event venue.
There’s also the simple fact that by 21, your social life has often changed quite a bit. Friends may be spread across different cities, working full-time or living away from home, so the traditional 100-person 21st birthday party isn't necessarily as appealing as it once was.
That makes the 18th birthday feel like the perfect opportunity for one last big backyard party.
Make the backyard work for you
If you're planning an 18th birthday in Sydney, don't automatically rule out your home because you think you don't have enough space.
A well-planned marquee can create an entirely separate party area, keeping guests outside and away from the main house.
You can add cocktail-style furniture, bars, stools, lounges, dining tables and a dance floor to create a space that feels like a proper event rather than a party in the backyard.
And of course, there’s the bonus of being able to personalise everything to suit the birthday person.
From a black-and-white cocktail party to a disco, festival, sports theme or something completely unique, the backyard is basically a blank canvas.
