So you have a 50th birthday coming up in your family. Your father, or maybe your husband, will be turning fifty. Your dad’s 50th birthday is a significant milestone, and it should be celebrated as such.
Now it is up to you to plan the party, and you want to make it epic. After all, your dad or husband is a special guy, and he deserves a little extra love on this special birthday.
There are plenty of ways you can have fun without making cheesy jokes about your dad’s age. It’s time to take 50th birthday parties to the whole next level – and to make sure that your dad enjoys himself too and it doesn’t have to cost a heap.
Here are seven suggestions that will help you do just that.
1. Base The Celebration Off His Favourite Movie
It might be Star Wars or Lord of the Rings or Marvel or an old school classic. Consider assigning different characters so that there aren’t too many of the same at the party. But if two or three people double up, who wore it best?! You can create a trivia about the movie to see who knows the most. You can vote on the best (and worst) costume. You can even act out scenes from the film. Whatever you do, this is sure to be a ton of fun!
2. Bring The Party To The Dance Floor
Dancing is a classic party pastime, and for a good reason. Versatile and simple, it is an excellent choice because everyone can enter in and have a good time.
Designate an open space for the dance area, and put down a dance floor. So if your dad is the active type who loves to see everyone having a good time, this is the way to go! String up sparkly lights, pull out that sparkling cider and you are good to go. If you want to experiment with traditional dances to honour your father’s heritage, go for it!
3. Create A Car Lover’s Heaven
Some boys don’t grow out of loving cars. Once they are into it, they are in forever. And that is perfectly fine! So if the birthday boy would love a car-themed fiftieth birthday party, go for it.
Buy miniatures of his favourite cars. Have friends and relatives bring their beautiful cars so your father can take a few minutes for joyriding. Also, if your special man likes cars, chances are he likes car racing. Consider incorporating decor from the Australian Grand Prix or other car races that he may love. You may even want to rent go-carts and have a race of your own.
4. Make It An All-Out Beer Festival
Does this event have to be family-friendly? If your neighbours are prepared and okay with it – feel free to go for a Beerfest. Turn up the music, pull out the coolers, start a barbecue, and have fun. Germany’s famous Oktoberfest is a perfect theme to decorate and dress for.
If you need to split the financial load, have each guest bring their favourite beverage and set up their own station. That way, no one person will be overwhelmed. This is one that may need a little more oversight, but if you encourage the party-goers to drink responsibly, all should be well.
5. Host A Party From A Different Time In History
A time in history is like a glorified costume party. You can choose the 1940s or the 1700s or anything in between. You may even want to have a throwback to the year your dad was born – that is if he wouldn’t be too offended. But then again, everyone knows how old he is turning anyway. Just make sure that your food matches the year that you choose. And consider finding entertainment that is similar to what they would have done back then as well. If this is a surprise party, make sure that you have an appropriate costume set aside for your dad to change into so that he can fit in!
6. Set Up A Murder Mystery
What’s not to love about a life-sized game of Murder Mystery? Your guests can team up to find out both who is guilty and how and why they committed the murder.
You can make this as spooky or as chill as you please. But feel free to set up a few booby traps along the way as well. The group may end up losing a few people (who know what’s going on), which heightens the intensity all the more. What’s the fun if there isn’t a little extra pressure?
7. Make The Party All About Cricket, Rugby, Or Footy
If your dad (or husband) is the kind of guy who yells at the TV screen or cancels events to catch up on a big game, this is the way to go. Choose a league to be the theme for the day (NRL, AFL, etc.); make sure you know which teams are his favourites so you can decorate accordingly.
To make things more interesting, you can have each person pick a name of a famous athlete and be that person for the rest of the night. You can also set up games and activities so that fans of rival teams can face off. Who can get the most points?
